The Evolution of Dilophosaurus Toys: From Jurassic Park to Jurassic World

The Dilop،saurus ،lds a unique place in Jur،ic Park lore. While it’s only briefly seen in the first film and has made relatively few appearances in the franchise’s media, its striking design—complete with a retractable frill and venom-spitting abilities—has left a lasting impression on fans. Interestingly, the movie’s depiction is far from scientifically accurate; the real Dilop،saurus lacked a frill and venom glands, and it was much larger and more imposing than the smaller creature seen on screen. Despite these deviations, the fictionalized version has ،ned a devoted following, becoming one of the franchise’s most iconic dinosaurs and inspiring decades of imaginative toy designs.

Kenner’s Cl،ic Beginnings (1993-1997). The first movie inspired Dilop،saurus toy debuted in Kenner’s original Jur،ic Park line in 1993. Two figures, one complete with signature frill and one with water-squirting feature, were a staple of many child،od collections. Kenner later revisited the species in The Lost World: Jur،ic Park line, offering a version with capture gear and a new striking color scheme that emphasized setting it apart from the previous version.

The Hasbro Era (1999-2014). After Kenner’s dominance, Dilop،saurus toys took a backseat during the franchise’s hiatus. However, collectors were treated to a ،nd new sculpt as part of Hasbro’s Jur،ic Park III line in 2001. A repainted version resurfaced in 2009 as part of a Toys “R” Us-exclusive line.

The Controversial 2015/2016 Line. When Jur،ic World hit theaters in 2015, Hasbro introduced a new wave of toys, including a basic Dilop،saurus figure. This toy, while accessible and affordable, was criticized for its simplified design, lack of true articulation, and a frill that felt underwhelming compared to Kenner’s earlier offerings. One year later, in 2016, a Dilop،saurus / T-Rex hybrid figure was ،uced as part of he Dino Hybrid line. Despite the criticisms, it reintroduced the dinosaur to a new generation of fans.

Mattel’s Revival (2018-Present). The introduction of Mattel’s Jur،ic World line in 2018 marked a turning point for Jur،ic World toys. Mattel emphasized accu، and playability, ،ucing a series of Dilop،saurus figures with vi،nt color schemes based on the film’s design, detailed frills, and articulated limbs. Some figures also came with interactive features, such as jaw movement, accessories and and venom-like projectiles.

Return to the silver screen. Jur،ic World Dominion finally reintroduced the Dilop،saurus on the silver screen, which prompted Mattel to release a playset recreating Claire’s encounter with the Spitter, just as seen in the motion picture.

A Fan Favorite Across Generations.The Dilop،saurus remains a beloved figure in the Jur،ic toy line, em،ying the perfect blend of nostalgia and innovation.
